The Rockhound Issue - Spring 2025

Writer: Amanda BradyAmanda Brady

Our spring issue is out, and it’s all about starting a rock and mineral collection.  Most kids, at one time or another, decide they are going to start a rock collection. Rocks are easy and fun to find, fit perfectly in a kid's pocket, and each rock is unique and a potential TREASURE! Below are a few helpful ideas to help extend this issue and make rockhounding a lifelong passion, or at least an afternoon activity that encourages kids to engage and observe the outside world around them.

So gather those Rockhounders, and let's go explore!

Rock & Mineral Hunting Ideas

The rock-hunting fun doesn’t have to stop when you’re done with the issue. There are so many ways to keep kids engaged and interested in learning more about rocks and minerals. Below are a few of our favorite books we used to research this issue. We also included a few ideas for ways to store your kid's collection (that hopefully keeps the rocks in one place and not all over your house) and how to help your records keep records of the rocks and minerals they find.

Other Ideas:

  • To help enhance the activity, have a special box or place to put their finds. You can use a regular cardboard box, an egg carton, or, if they really get into it, this plastic organization container is great for displaying, organizing, and keeping rocks where they belong.  We love this one we found on Amazon 👉 https://amzn.to/4irAn70

  • Grab an old binder and a three-hole punch, and print off as many journal pages as you want! This activity extender will help kids know what to look for and encourage writing, reporting, observing, and drawing skills. Download your FREE journal page and print it as many times as you want!

  • If you need more issues or want to reprint this issue at home, check out the Freezer Section of our website to make a digital download purchase or to buy the issue.
